“Well, hello, sugars,” said the Dolly Parton lookalike sitting behind the reception counter in Beauregard’s dealer service area. The nameplate nestled between the antibacterial gel and a collection of Disney Funko Pops identified her as Marla. “What can I do for you today?”

You can start by not calling me sugar, Sawyer thought. Rather than voicing his thought, he said, “We’re here to speak to Wayne Miller, ma’am.”

Marla’s eyes widened. “What’s this about?”

Sawyer unclipped his badge and showed it to her in case she missed the shield on the chain around Locke’s neck. “We’re here on official police business, and we need to speak to Mr. Miller privately, please.”

“Oh, sure,” Marla said. “Let me show you to the breakroom. It’s empty at the moment since the guys have all just finished their lunch breaks.”

“Thank you, Marla,” Locke said.

She walked out from behind the tall counter and gestured for them to follow her. Marla wore a hot pink, ruffled tank top, a tight pair of white capri pants, and hot pink wedges. It wasn’t the outfit so much that caught Sawyer’s attention as it was the black, greasy handprint on her right ass cheek. Sawyer glanced over at Locke and caught his smirk. Feeling his partner’s attention, Locke met Sawyer’s gaze with a sneer before turning his eyes back to Marla’s well-toned ass. Sawyer had to admit it was hard to look away, which was why they both got caught when she stopped at an open door and turned to face them.

“I want to be flattered by your attention, but I can tell by your expressions that you weren’t really admiring my ass. Wayne put a big, greasy handprint on me again, didn’t he?” Locke and Sawyer both nodded. Marla released a loud huff. “I’m going to kill him. Marking his territory like I’m a fire hydrant and he’s a dog. You’d think after eight months of dating he’d feel less insecure. Make yourselves comfortable. Would you like something to drink? We have soda, water, coffee, and tea.”

Sawyer shook his head. “No, thank you.”

“I’m good also,” Locke replied.

“I’ll just be a minute.” Marla turned and walked in the other direction.

Sawyer elbowed Locke in the ribs to get his attention off Marla’s ass and back on their case. He tipped his head toward the breakroom, and Locke led the way inside, a low chuckle rumbling from his chest.

“You couldn’t stop staring either,” Locke said.

“True, but I probably wasn’t having the same thoughts as you.”

Locke released a long sigh. “There you go with your assumptions again. I was thinking it was a shitty thing to do to a woman. Someone’s dick is so tiny he needed to ruin her pants to make sure the world knows she’s his. Pathetic.” Of course, Locke would never have to resort to such drastic measures with the women he pursued. “You owe me an apology for your shallow opinion of my character.”

Sawyer chuckled because he couldn’t take his partner seriously when he wore that mock outraged expression on his handsome face.
